The words ‘broken underground drain’ can make homeowners picture a trench running through the entire yard. This repair shows a more targeted outcome. Once the damaged section was accurately located beside the deck, only the area needed for the repair had to be opened.

The Repair Story

The failed section was removed and replaced with new PVC pipework, and an inspection opening was added for future access. The surrounding deck could remain in place because the work focused on the confirmed defect rather than excavating the full pipe run.

When a localised repair may be suitable

Targeted excavation can work well when CCTV footage identifies a specific broken junction, collapsed section or badly displaced connection. It may also be required where the pipe has lost its shape or alignment and cannot be successfully relined.

In this case, the sewer at this home in Freshwater was severely damaged by tree roots. While we could clear most of the line, this particular section required us to replace the drainage. We then used our advanced Pipe Relining technology to strengthen the pipe and stop future tree roots from entering.

Why accurate locating matters

Before digging, we use a CCTV drain camera and locating equipment to identify the position and depth of the defect. Accurate locating reduces unnecessary excavation and helps the team plan around decks, paving, landscaping and other structures.

What happens during the repair?

The affected section is carefully exposed, removed and replaced with compatible drainage pipe and fittings. Connections must be secure, correctly aligned and installed with suitable fall so wastewater can continue moving through the line by gravity.

The value of an inspection opening

An accessible inspection point can make future drain cleaning and camera inspections faster and less disruptive. Its position and design need to suit the drainage layout and applicable plumbing requirements.

Local repair versus pipe relining

Pipe relining repairs cracks and leaking joints from inside the existing pipe and can avoid excavation in many situations. Local replacement is more appropriate when a section has collapsed, shifted significantly or needs its alignment corrected. Some jobs use both methods to address different defects along the same line.

Protecting the surrounding property

A planned repair should consider access, soil conditions and nearby structures before work begins. The aim is to expose only what is necessary, complete the repair correctly and restore the area as neatly as possible.
