A blocked drain can look like a simple obstruction from above ground. Inside this pipe, the real story was much bigger. Tree roots had pushed through damaged clay pipework, then caught waste and broken fragments until the waterway was heavily restricted.

What the job revealed

Once the inside of the drain came into view, there was no mystery left. Roots were running through the pipe, loose fragments were sitting in the flow path and very little clear space remained.

Clearing this mess could get the water moving again, but it would not close the opening that let the roots in.

Why clay drains are vulnerable

Earthenware and clay pipes were widely used in older Sydney homes – found heavily around the Northern Beaches and North Shore areas. Individual pipe lengths were joined together underground, and those joints can move, separate or deteriorate over time.

Ground movement, ageing seals and nearby trees can all expose small openings.

How roots create a blockage

Fine feeder roots enter first because they are attracted to moisture. They then branch and thicken inside the drain.

The growing root mass catches waste until water can no longer move freely, causing slow drainage, gurgling, unpleasant smells or a complete sewer blockage.

How tree roots enter pipes and cause blocked drains

Why cutting the roots is not a permanent repair

High-pressure water jetting and specialist root-cutting equipment can remove the obstruction and allow the drain to flow again.

However, the roots can return if the crack or failed joint remains open. Repeatedly clearing the drain without repairing the defect often leads to the same problem recurring.

How the damage is diagnosed

After the drain has been cleared, a CCTV drain camera can inspect the full pipe.

The footage helps locate the entry point, measure the damaged section and determine whether other cracks, displaced joints or collapsed areas are present.

Repair options

A structurally sound pipe with localised cracks may be suitable for pipe relining, which seals the damaged area from inside the existing drain.

A badly displaced or collapsed pipe may require excavation and replacement. The right option depends on the pipe’s condition, alignment and access.

When to arrange an inspection

Book a drain inspection if:

  • The same line keeps blocking

  • Several fixtures drain slowly

  • Toilets are gurgling

  • Tree roots have previously been removed

Early diagnosis can help prevent sewage overflows and more extensive damage.
